Advent calendars have been around since the end of the 19th century. In the early days, they were simple ways of counting down the time until Christmas: With lines on the wall, a candle that was burnt each day until the next of the 24 lines, or with 24 pictures that were hung up one by one. Advent calendars with little doors to open have been around since the 1920s, originally concealing pictures. It was not until the 1930s that Advent calendars with contents (chocolate or biscuits) appeared.
Today there are Advent calendars with a wide variety of fillings - but the one from Lebkuchen-Schmidt is definitely the tastiest!
