Advent calendars have been known since the end of the 19th century. In the early days, they were simple ways to count down the time until Christmas: With lines on the wall, a candle that was burned each day until the next of the 24 lines, or with 24 pictures that were hung up one by one.

Advent calendars with little doors to open have been around since the 1920s, originally containing special little pictures. It was not until the 1930s that Advent calendars with contents (such as chocolate or biscuits) appeared.
