It represents a stylised fig or ivy leaf and because ivy is a long-living plant, the heart symbol represented eternal love on vases, frescoes and other works of art. The heart acquired its red colour in the 12th/13th century at the time of the Minnengesang. Since the 13th century, it has also symbolised the human organ.
